Patterns
As you progress in Taekwon-Do and move through the belts, you will learn a new pattern. The purpose of these patterns is to develop your technique and they are something that can be practiced anywhere.
- Patterns should begin and end at exactly the same spot. This will indicate the performers accuracy.
- Correct posture and facing must be maintained at all times.
- Muscles of the body should be either tensed or relaxed at the proper critical moments in the exercise.
- The exercise should be performed in a rhythmic movement with an absence of stiffness.
- Each pattern should be perfected before moving to the next.
- Students should know the purpose of each movement.
- Students should perform each movement with realism.

Chon Ji means literally "Heaven and Earth". It is, in the Orient, interpreted as the creation of the world or the beginning of human history, therefore it is the initial pattern for the beginner. The pattern consists of two similar parts, one to represent the Heaven and one to represent the Earth (19 moves) |

Joon Gun is named after the patriot An-Joong-Gun who assassinated Hiro Bumi Ito, the first Japanese Governor General of Korea, known as the man who played the leading part in the Korea-Japan merger. Toi Gye is the pen name of the noted 16th century scholar Yi Hwang, who is regarded as an authority on neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements refer to his birthplace on 37 degrees latitude, and the movements reflect the calligraphy for "Scholar". (37 moves) |

Hwa Rang is named after the Hwa Rang youth group that originated in the Silla dynasty in the early 7th century. The 29 movements refer to the 29th Infantry Division commanded by General Choi in 1953 where Taekwon-do developed into maturity. (29 moves) |

Choong Moo was the name given to the great Admiral Yi Sun Sin of the Yi Dynasty. He was reputed to have invented the first armoured battle ship in AD 1592 (The Kobukson) which was the precursor of the present day submarine. The reason why this pattern finishes with a left hand attack is to symbolise his regrettable death, having no chance to show his full potential through the constraints of his loyalty to the King.
