Belts and their Meaning

Here is useful basic information about the meanings behind the coloured belts. To remember these could make the difference between passing or failing a grading... or getting push-ups in class. Argh! Those soon help you remember!

10th Kup

White

Signifies the innocence of the beginner student who has no previous knowledge of Taekwon-Do
(10th - 9th Kup)
9th Kup
8th Kup

Yellow

Signifies the seed in the earth from which the plant sprouts and takes root as the foundations of Taekwon-Do are laid
(8th - 7th Kup)
7th Kup
6th Kup

Green

Signifies the plants growth as skills in Taekwon-Do begin to develop
(6th - 5th Kup)
5th Kup
4th Kup

Blue

Signifies the Heaven towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Taekwon-Do progresses
(4th - 3rd Kup)
3rd Kup
2nd Kup

Red

Signifies Danger, cautioning the student to exercise control, and warning the opponent to beware
(2nd - 1st Kup)
1st Kup
1st Dan

Black

Opposite of White, therefore signifying the maturity and proficiency in Taekwon-Do and symbolising the wearer's imperviousness to fear
